Title: Hatred Bound; Love Learned
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, Harry/Ginny (briefly and vaguely), Ron/Hermione (off to the side).

Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): M/M (duh), adult content, language…in other words, nothing too bad! <3 Also, Mpreg, which I’m only warning because I know it squicks some people something fierce.
Epilogue compliant? Nope; this one is EWE.
Word Count: 21,000
Author's Notes: For drarryxlover. I tried my best to incorporate the things you said you liked: Eighth year, Mpreg, forced/accidental bonding, infidelity, angst with a happy ending. In truth, it turned out a bit shorter then I’d originally intended, but I quite like it anyway. And I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. But, you know, hopefully without all of the stress that came from writing for someone whose name I recognized! <3

A huge thank you to my beta, CJ, for everything she did to help me with this, including talking to me at all hours of the night while I was planning and freaking out. To C1 for letting me bounce various ideas off of her and for not getting angry that I was blowing off the fic I’m writing her for this! And to C2, without whom this fic wouldn’t have a title. (I literally spent two days trying to get others to help me name this, with no luck; two minutes talking to C2 and I had my title. She’s the BEST at naming fics for me!) I couldn’t have done this without all of you ladies; you’re amazing and I love you to little bitty pieces! Also, a huge thanks to the mods for running this (even if it is the final year)! And an extra-special thank you to mod-Dyson for being a lovely little cheerleader for me when I was panicking over having to write for someone who’s work I love.

And lastly, a thank you to drarryxlover for the pleasure of writing this and I really do hope you enjoy this just as much as I enjoyed writing it. It’s been a blast! <3

Well, we've already spoken, darling, but I'm thrilled you liked it! As you know, this was something of a deviation from my typical plot-type, but I enjoyed it a lot and I'm pleased you did as well! <3

Very sweet! And I really enjoyed Ron's 'epilogue' -- nicely done :)

Thanks so much! <3 Ron's bit was actually written two weeks AFTER I finished this. I had no internet and the fic hadn't gone to beta yet because of it...and the thing was just niggling at me. So I ended up adding it. I was worried people weren't going to enjoy it and I'm pleased I was wrong!

Not to undermine the rest of the story - it was lovely and refreshing and made me smile and giggle... but I really think I liked the "extra" at the end best of all. It was such a transformation in such a small space of time but it was spot on with his character and it was a truly perfect "bow" to a wonderful present! Thanks for the share!
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 15th, 2013 07:20 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much for your review! I like your little metaphor about Ron's bit being the "bow" because I wrote it two weeks after I finished the fic itself. So glad you enjoyed it. <3

I love forced bonding fics and the way Narcissa played the trump card to force the bond seriously had me smiling. Well done.

Thank you for reviewing! Narcissa is always fun for me to write; she has so much depth and such a strong love for her child and I loved getting a chance to show that in the same breath as exhibiting her Slytherin traits. "Motherly love" doesn't have to be sweet...in her case, it's fierce and deadly. And I love it. So glad you did as well!

Oh my! Firstly, I love you.

This is a beautiful story, told so well and with everything I love :D Thank you. It's perfect.

I love the bit at the end, Ron's POV, it shows how he's matured as a character and how he takes time to understand things but then... he's wonderful and I think you captured him perfectly.

I'm so happy about this, and it's brilliant writing that I just want to sit here and cry with happiness, I'm a bit speechless but thank you, so much. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

i really enjoyed lots of little bits about this fic. I really liked the way it felt like they were guys with the boys discussing kissing and sex and so on. I also enjoyed the fact that there wasn't any Ginny bashing and that she was very accepting. Great work :)
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 15th, 2013 07:29 pm (UTC)
I hate Ginny!Bashing. I don't think she's a horrible person. I may not like her grabby, fangirl hands on Harry...but I don't think she's a bad person at all. And I like to write her as a mature, loving person who understands when someone needs something she can't give.

Also, the boys were fun to write. I think a lot of the time the fact that they're "boys" gets lost in them being wizards and the war and everything else, but let's face it. Dorm room, no one around...sex and kissing and such SHOULD come up. I know we don't see it in the books, but I'm willing to bet money it was happening. And it's something "normal" which I think means they'd need it even more after the war when everything was settling down.

Glad you enjoyed and thanks for commenting. ^_^

That was a sweet story. I'm so glad Harry and Draco got their happy ending. While Ron's short character vignette was unexpected in an H/D fest, I greatly enjoyed it. You wrote him so well. I loved seeing him slowly mature and how his perception of Harry and Draco's relationship changed. Thank you for not Ginny bashing either. She was mature and strong, a side of her that's rarely seen.
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 15th, 2013 07:32 pm (UTC)
I don't like Ginny!Bashing, so I do my best to paint her in a better light.

I was actually VERY worried about Ron's bit being accepted, because of it being an H/D fest. The positive response to it was such a lovely surprise and a great relief. I'm so glad you liked it! <3

Thanks so much for commenting; fluff and sweetness aren't my forte, so I'm pleased I did it well enough that everyone enjoyed it!

Aww! This is so cute! And fluffy! I'm glad that Ginny's mature and generous enough to... well, to not make a big deal out of everything. And I like the way you wrote Blaise and Draco's friendship... cuddling up together on bed while discussing Harry? That's just so cute! I can totally picture Draco, all long and pale slender limbs curled up beside a sturdier and darker-skinned Blaise! That made such a cute picture in my head *happy sigh* Harry's almost the perfect gentleman in this story. I have to say this had been a truly enjoyable read!
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 15th, 2013 07:37 pm (UTC)
Thank you SO much, sweetie! ^_^ I love when someone enjoys multiple fics from me and you've now read two fluffy ones of mine since I know you read my Smoochfest. XD

You can see my theme of not-Ginny!Bashing, lol. I just can't see loving someone that much and seeing them love someone else so much more and then NOT wanting them to have that. Not wanting them to have the person they want above everyone else, even if it's not you. To me, loving someone is wanting what's best for them...even if it's someone else. And Ginny sees that.

I love Blaise and Draco's relationship. Sandbox love never dies, you know! They've been best friends their whole lives in my mind - since they were in nappies - and I just adore the idea of the two of them being able to relax around each other. Like Draco would NEVER cry in front of Crabbe or Goyle or Theo...but around Blaise? Sure. Because he knows Blaise will just snuggle him and help him plot.

And Harry directly post-war was interesting to write. I'm glad you liked him! <3

I love that Ginny was the adult in this, that she wasn't happy, but also didn't turn into a complete bitch. And it was really lovely to see Narcissa throw the trump card to take care of Draco. Nicely done.
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 16th, 2013 05:21 am (UTC)
I adore Ginny. I don't think she and Harry belong together, but I like her as a person. So I don't like to turn her into a bitch or a slut just to break her and Harry up. I prefer to do it neutrally. Narcissa is one of my favorite Slytherins to write and having her show her claws was a LOT of fun. So glad you liked it! <3

Great story. The reasons you had each character use for refusing to help were really good, especially Ginny's. Having Narcissa force the bond was a very effective way of working a forced bond into the story, I liked the way Harry and Draco's relationship built, and the mpreg was sweet. Really enjoyed it!

One has got to love forced bonding fics; at least I do. This was a new approach from what I have previously read so kudos for that. I loved the Narcissa twist to that bond that was added. And it just like Harry to take I in stride. Oh and the fluff and the pink g Draco. It was oh so great. Also that scene where they finally get together was just hot. Poor Ginny, you got to feel a tiny bit sorry for her. But it all worked out in the end.

Ohh, wow.

Where do I even begin! Well, I guess I'll start at the start and say that you broke my heart with how badly Pansy was being abused but how you characterized everyone's vehemence against her seems so... human. It's nice to read stories where everyone is big and mature and just moves on after the war, but let's face it, you've got a group of people, in this case young and impressionable who spent a year plus confronting evil, losing loved ones, fighting for their lives and when you look at the "bad guys" from canon, it's going to be HARD to say let's just move on. Same with how everyone wanted to refuse to protect Draco, it's one thing to say listen I'm not going to hurt the kid it's another to say that I'm going to stand up for him (although when taken out of "former Death Eater" context isn't that exactly what we need more kids doing in this age of rampant bullying and youth suicide - see you've got me thinking all these deep moral thoughts!!!) but I guess what I'm getting it as this transition from hate to love or at let acceptance felt really real and I loved that (because I've come to accept that I'm a sap and a 100% HD lover so I'll happily read stories where there is no character development and exploration of emotions but man oh man do I relish when and author takes the time to do all that. ~mwah~)

"I thought it would be like…like need. Like we needed each other, after everything we’d been through. Like we couldn’t breathe without each other…like … Like a day not seeing each other…it wouldn’t be right. Like…if we weren’t touching…things would fall apart….or…or if we didn’t kiss…right then, that instant…the whole world would stop. Like we’d…like we’d just die without another touch…or…or we’d…we’d just shatter if the other one wasn’t there. I just thought…I thought it’d feel like…like…”

Happy content sigh, well if you made the realizing me squee in the fist part of the story, you made the Romantic in me very very happy at this point (and on). I don't know how many people get to find this kind of love (I sure haven't) but I really like to think that it's out there and I like to think that after all they have been through it's the kind of love Harry and Draco would get.

Ginny- I almost for got to say something about Ginny, i won't say much actually except that again I loved how you handled it. I'm not sure if I could have been that understanding, but she's loved Harry for a long time and I can see how that love can transcend the romantic love to the unselfish, I want you to be happy love. Plus I think she's going to be just fine, there is someone great out there for her, she absolutely ships well with so many of the other characters ;)

And Ron... Your bonus feature. So glad you shared that as well, again with the whole writing relate-able characters thing, so wonderful Anon. Because it'snt learning to share your friends and family with their new loves and families such a quintessential struggle as we reach young adulthood. For me it certainly was. Plus how you balanced this universal emotion with the uniqueness of Ron was spot on. Finally when he compared Harry and Draco to Remus and Tonks... Yeah, that was... Well it made my heart hurt in all the right ways.

So yeah, um, I liked this story ;) but seriously it was really great, thanks for sharing.

I swear to Merlin, your review MADE MY DAY! I loved how long and detailed it was and it drove me nuts that I couldn't reply right away!

When it comes to the issue of people holding grudges, I feel like too many 8th year fics don't address it. Too many have everyone just gloss over the war and it's NOT accurate. Those kids went through HELL. They lost friends and family; they were tortured; they were forced to do horrible things. I cannot even IMAGINE the hell they went through during the war and under the reign of the Carrows. So to imagine they would all just smile and move on? It's not logical. I wanted to showcase that. And to showcase that not doing anything to STOP bullying is just as bad as doing it yourself. Everyone was at fault in this fic, because no one was willing to step up and say "STOP!" and I wanted to show that.

I'm pleased the romantic in you got a good squee out of this! <3 I think that that sort of need and love is very rare; I think it's one of the rarest things in the world. But I also think it's what all of us wish for, at least on some level. And if we settle for less, than it's okay, because we're happy...but part of us always sighs wistfully when we watch a movie or read a book that has that sort of love in it. Because we WANT it. And I think that Harry would want it more than most. And I think that, if anyone has earned it, it's him.

On Ginny - I have a GREAT fondness for her. I don't like her with Harry, but I love her as a person. And I think when you love someone for that long, you can let them go if it's what makes them happy.

As to Ron - I think he's a greatly misjudged character. And I'm SO glad you liked the Remus/Tonks comparison. Because of him leaving Harry and Hermione during the camping trip from hell, he saw more of their relationship than we, the reader, did. I thought the comparison was apt, but I couldn't use it without Ron's bit because it had to come from someone who saw it first-hand.

So glad you loved it that much; it really made my day! <3

This whole story was amazing, but the scene with Ginny coming into the bedroom was the one that stuck with me. It's infidelity and it's a break-up, which usually makes me feel sad and icky. But the way you wrote it, the way that she slowly pieces it all together and sees the love between them--it was beautiful. It was heartbreaking for her, but I loved how accepting and strong she is. She demonstrates that loving someone is wanting what's best for them.

I loved the way you set up the bullying and the bond. I like that each person who declined the bond actually thought Draco deserved an explanation of why. Oh, and protective!Narcissa is always great!
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 16th, 2013 06:04 am (UTC)
Thanks SO much! I had to balance that scene VERY carefully so that no one came off as the asshole. And Ginny's slow-realization was a complex bit to write. I'm glad it came off well! <3

The bullying as a basis for the Bond was the best way I could think of it do it and, because of that, I wanted everyone to tell Draco why they wouldn't (or couldn't) be the one to protect them. I felt it was important. Not even so much because they felt Draco needed an explanation, but because they felt the need to justify it to themselves and each other. Which is a very human thing to do.

And yes, I love Narcissa as well! <3

Awww that was so sweet! Loved the idea of the Protective Bond for Draco (I am in the midst of writing a fic with Harry being someone's protector via a bond (Not Draco), so the idea that someone else had already done that was interesting. As much as I liked the fic, and I did enjoy it, it was the extra bit from Ron's POV that really moved me! It was all so very Ron.

OMG, I loved this SO MUCH! You actually made me feel sorry for Pansy Parkinson. How did you DO that? LOL I loved how docile Draco was right after the bond (even though I don't usually like that sort of thing). And Harry's realization of wanting Draco was so... BAM! Although I truly think my favorite part was the last part from Ron. It was just so...Ron. Perfect ending!
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 16th, 2013 06:12 am (UTC)
Because Pansy is human too!!! I actually have a gift for writing the Slytherins in a way that makes people empathize with them and their actions.

For Draco's docility...it was primarily a self-preservation thing. Don't bite the hand that feeds (or in this case protects) you.

I loved the sudden, intense reaction on Harry's part. I feel like that's just how he is. Like, he sort of blinks and realizes things; it's just an aspect of his personality and one I had fun exploiting! ^__^

Glad you liked Ron; that bit was LOVELY to write! <3

A forced bonding story! One of my favorite tropes, and this one was done exceptionally well! I felt so bad for Pansy and Draco in the beginning, and a little peeved at Harry and Hermione that they didn't notice how bad it had gotten for the Slytherins. I loved the way they slowly became closer, and the first kiss was incredible. Then their first time together was so endearing. I felt so proud of Ginny that she loved Harry enough to let him go (I don't know if I'd have been able to do that in her position). And then mpreg too! Another of my favorite Harry/Draco cliches! This story just hit all my buttons! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! Oh, and I loved the little glimpse into Ron's thoughts at the end. Bonus story is always appreciated!
vampyrerayne: pic#119742239vampyrerayne on January 16th, 2013 06:22 am (UTC)
It was my FIRST forced-Bonding story, so I'm pleased someone who likes those enjoyed it so much! I think people don't often see how much people around them are suffering; I think people wear blinders. And I wanted to exhibit that alongside the bullying. Hermione was my way of doing that. Harry was my way of showing that people often try to "excuse" or "dismiss" bullying.

I loved Ginny in this; she came off very mature and loving. Glad you liked the Mpreg and that you enjoyed my Little Something Extra! <3
