Happy H/D Holidays, fourth_rose!
Author: blamebrampton
Recipient: fourth_rose
Title: For the Public Good
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, possibly many people/Boris Johnson, but let’s not go there.
Summary: Harry is loaned to the Muggle government to assist relations between the two governments after the London bombings. When his counterpart in the Communications team comes to him with evidence of a plot to expose wizarding Britain, he is all ears. And only in part because the messenger has such a familiar voice.
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): The promptee requested Draco dealing with the Muggle world, hence there is an awful lot of it!
Epilogue compliant? What is this epilogue of which you speak?
Word Count: ~23,500
Author's Notes: Dear Rose, I am a great fan of your work, and, as such, it pains me to admit failure. But while your prompts of politics, Draco dealing with Muggle culture and professional jobs were easy enough, every time I sat down to write angst, comedy erupted instead. I ask a great favour – that you believe they are using humour to mask their pain. Aside from that, I think I hit most of your requests, and do hope you enjoy this trifle, gifted to you in suitable appreciation of your wonderful opus. Many thanks to those who helped with it, you are all wonderful. And to the mods for their patience and support, which was above and beyond!

Aaarrgh, I have to leave in a few minutes and can't start reading right away! *wails* It looks absolutely fantabulous, dear mystery writer - I'm sooo looking forward to it! :))

Oh. My. God. I was torn between rushing through this fic because I couldn't get enough of it and reading as slowly as possible because I didn't want it to end, and now that I'm done, all I can do is quote your Draco: I may be in love.

No, scratch that, I am in love.

I can't wait to find out who you are, mystery author, because your gift managed to hit every single one of my buttons. When I asked for politics, I never dreamed that I would get Wizard and Muggle politics in one single, incredibly entertaining package. I was keeping tabs of my favourite quotes at first, but then I quickly gave up because I'd basically be quoting half the story back at you. I loved every aspect of this fic: the set-up, the plot, the wonderfully wry humour, and especially all those brilliant details that made me grin like a loon throughout the story. You also did a great job with portraying Harry and Draco as adults, and in spite of the humourous tone, the development of their relationship felt utterly natural and realistic.

Also, you made me regret not being British, because I'm sure I missed some of the finer details about the inner workings of British politics - but from now on I'll never be able to watch a speech by Gordon Brown on TV without thinking of Felix Felicis, and I won't even mention what the Archbishop of Canterbury will remind me of ;)

Gah, this review really isn't doing your story justice, but I guess I'm still a bit speechless and reduced to incoherent squeeing. Thank you SO much, dear author, for this utterly brilliant gift - this story will go right into my "feel-good fics" folder to be re-read over and over :)

*fangirls you*

I absolutely bloody loved this. The political detail, the humour, the story... just wonderful. I'll definitely be saving this one to re-read. Liked the use of 'cock' as an expletive. My favourite line, I think, was 'I felt you up in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury.’
‘I thought you were being ironic.’

Laughed myself silly at the thought of Draco being chased by Mandy (still can't get my head round him being in the Lords now) and am trying not to imagine A Boris sex-scandal involving ANYONE - Petsy was distressing enough! So, thanks for that, mystery(?) author. I enjoyed it immensely.

Mandy in the Lords is reason enough not to move back to England yet ;-)

Yours was the first real comment I received on this story, and as soon as I read it, I was so relieved. I always know that if you enjoy something, then it is actually worthwhile and not just amusing in my demented head. And I couldn't agree with you more about Mandy!

Oh, perfect! *sighs happily* This hit all my buttons: smart, snappy dialogue; Draco snark with just enough underlying fondness; appealing OCs (I adored Emily and Mike); a well-executed plot; interesting setting (though I suspect some of the political humor was over my head); oblivious!Harry who doesn't take too long to get with the program; and a hint of vulnerable!Draco that makes me squirm with delight. I loved Harry's deadpan responses and Draco's flamboyant but very controlled humor. There are too many lines I could quote. I was just rereading one of my favorite fics, Blythe's Corridors of Power, last night, and this reminds me of it, not in a derivative way, but in its sparkly intelligence, superb worldbuilding and total command of the characterization. I'm tempted to shove all my bothersome paperwork aside, close my office door and read it again straight away. Thank you, mystery author!

Thanks so much for your lovely comment, sorry for my terrible lateness in replying! I am thrilled to be mentioned in the same sentence as CoP, Blythe is a great favourite of mine and the Liberal Democrat joke was a direct nod to her. Cheers, and thanks again!

Sorry for such a ridiculous delay in replying, but thank you so much for your comment! I was so glad to hear you liked the Mandy business; I fretted it would be over the top, but then wondered if that's possible ;-) Thanks for taking the time to let me know, your comment really made my day.

‘Oh Potter,’ Malfoy said fondly. ‘You’re not entertaining.’

‘I can be,’ Harry said without thinking.

I can't speak for all the loveliness! Lucky, lucky fourth_rose, to receive such a wonderful gift.

Thanks so much for your lovely comment! And is that a lungwort flower in your icon? It's beautiful but blurred to me.

Oh, this is brilliant. Utterly, completely brilliant. The plot is superb - so completely British, so many perfect details - and the characterizations are a joy. Not just Harry and Draco, but the OCs as well. Really, really well done. Can't wait to find out who you are. My favorite of the fest!

Thank you so much for your kind words, you charming human, you! I am so sorry for the long delay in replying, I am living in Sydney at the moment and have spent the entire month hiding in a fridge. Alas, I barely jest ;-(

Oh god, I never read H/D, but Rose's rec was just too tempting and I have been biting through my fist with glee and ‘Explain as I might, Mr Potter, I fear the subtleties of Death Eater humour would be lost on you.’ and you have totally wrong footed me, because I am always bristling and ready to pout at the way Ron is mocked in an H/D, and I find myself bristling about my beloved Peter Mandelson, for the first time in fanfic, and I am slightly confused, and then you get my hopes up with ‘I did snog my ex-girlfriend’s brother once,’ Harry admitted, before squicking me with And everyone in Romania, because my Charlie is completely asexual, but then the Archbishop of Canterbury is all understanding and Harry is all flustered and makes Malfoy stumble.

Don't do it again.
blamebramptonblamebrampton on January 28th, 2009 03:33 pm (UTC)
I am so sorry to have caused you so much conflict, but was delighted to read your comment, which made ME laugh out loud. Alas, I then spent the following month hiding in a fridge, hence the tardiness of this reply. I am so sorry about missing the Harry/Ron possibility, alas, Hermione in my head is such a vixen that Ron decides to forego the obvious charms of his slightly screwy best friend (mostly because he wants a peaceful night's sleep for the first time in years). But I was thrilled you enjoyed it, thank you so much for letting me know!

*wails with pain*

Ow... ah. What have you done to me? My whole body is aching from laughing so hard! What an utterly, utterly brilliant fic this is, from the premise to the pacing, from the development of the relationship, the OCs (how perfect is Mike?? ♥), the allusions to British politics (which I caught about 25 % of, at the most) to the tiny details (Hoare's bank!!).

Needless to say that both Harry and Draco have totally won my heart...

Rose is a very lucky flower to receive such a terrific gift, and we are lucky along with her!
blamebramptonblamebrampton on January 28th, 2009 03:34 pm (UTC)
Oh Ms Cute, I am so sorry for your aching ribs, but so happy you enjoyed this! I am a big fan of Rose's so I was overjoyed to receive her as my giftee, thank GOODNESS she was only joking in her desire for something sane ;-)

This is quite possibly my most favorite story thus far. I think I might know who you are but I can't positively be certain of it though. I absolutely adored this story, mostly because it was such a delightful read, exceedingly clever and most of all, very realistic. Lovely, absolutely lovely.
