HAPPY H/D HOLIDAYS, SASSY_CISSA!
Author: taradiane
Recipient: sassy_cissa
Title: Some Kind of Wonderful
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione (very far in the background), Draco/Astoria (past)
Summary: Harry is adrift without an anchor after the prophecy that shaped the first eighteen years of his life is fulfilled. Restless and bored, and wanting to stop Hermione from nagging him about wasted opportunities, he decides to spend his time volunteering at a Muggle homeless shelter...then along comes Malfoy, with an anchor of his own that he needs help carrying.
Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): MPREG (but non-graphic, there is no girly!Draco or birthing through the mouth Hey, I read that in a fic once, I promise!), minor character death (happens offscreen), angst, UST-to-RST, major abuse to all laws of nature and mankind (ain't magic grand?), and some man-on-man mouth-on-bits action. There is also some frank discussion of a dysfunctional sexual relationship between a man and woman, if that bothers you. And, er, also blatant and obvious theft of a scene from Deathly Hallows part one - insincere apologies to Dan and Emma. There is also talk of miscarriage.
Epilogue compliant? A little bit yes, but mostly no. I took what I liked from the epilogue and threw away what didn't suit my story (99.9% of it).
Word Count: ~34,700
Author's Notes: OMGNO MPREG EVERYONE RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! Ahem. The mods have informed me that I have the only MPREG fic this year, so yay for individuality? One of the mods also tells me that you're quite fond of this genre, sassy_cissa, so I hope that I've managed to do it in a way that pleases you. :) If not, your fault for asking for it! I, too, am very particular about the MPREG that I prefer, and admit to shaping that part of the story in this very particular way. I do hope that you aren't the only one to read this because of that warning, because ultimately this is a story about how two people find their way through life - first separate, and then together, and how sharing it can allow 'some kind of wonderful' to shine through the banality of a mundane existence.

*Title shamelessly stolen not from the well-known 1960's tune of the same name, but from the 1980's movie (also of the same name). RIP John Hughes, I ♥ you.

Also, St. Mungo's is a real organisation located in London, and all of the locations are real. I know very little about how they run their organization, but instead took my own experiences of volunteering and inserted them. I mean absolutely no disrespect, but simply used the opportunity to raise awareness of a very real place that does very real hard work on behalf of those in need.

LOL I figured that you might!

This was wonderful. The ending of Harry and Ginny's relationship seemed very natural...as did the beginning of Harry and Draco's....and the mpreg was natural too (as odd as that sounds)...

My favorite part was SAM! I've never even heard of that being a possible nickname for Scorpius before..how original!
(Anonymous) on January 1st, 2011 12:37 am (UTC)
Author here...you've likely never heard Sam because Alexander isn't his real middle name - but as I had already bastardized canon so much already, I thought why the hell not do what I want, haha.

And your comment that the mpreg was 'natural' was probably the best compliment I could receive. I know how the genre can turn people away, so I really wanted to try and do it justice on a large stage like hd_holidays.

Lovely, lovely story :)

I adore mpreg when it's well done, and this most certainly was. The slowly evolving relationship between Harry and Draco was beautiful, and Harry's constant urge to touch Draco, to feel the baby made me just melt. I loved how it was never even an issue with Harry that the baby wasn't his - it was just another part of the man he loved.

Wonderful job ♥

Also, I LOVE that film so much. I'm right there with you on the John Hughes love

This was gorgeous. I love it when Harry takes care of Draco. And he did it so beautifully here.

This has to be one of the best mpreg I read on this site esp. with the Christmas theme.Hope you make another one soon.

I quite like mpreg - not sure why I don't write more fic in that genre...but thank you very much for the review! I'm glad that you liked it. :)

Beautifully written and the perfect amount of sweet. I loved Harry's apathy for life and the way that transformed into a genuine caring for Draco. Lovely.

Gorgeous. I'm not a fan of mpreg (not a squick, just...not a fan) but I thought this was really nicely done. I like how Draco's pregnancy came to be, it was (as far as I'm aware) a novel and refreshing approach; I really like how you portrayed Draco's mixed feelings about it; how he wanted it but not in that way. I like Astoria's story; I think you managed to make her quite *real* and sympathetic in a few quick sketches. I also like the effort you made to make Ginny, for example, a real person; not entirely likeable, but not a complete bitch. Harry's progression in his love for Draco was nicely placed and just heart-melting. The ending was just....aaahhh :D

PS I absolutely love your inclusion of The Dance (omg how wonderful was that in the movie? I can't believe how emotional it made me, kudos to whoever thought to include that, kudos to DanRad for being utterly sexy and lovely in it, and kudos to you for making this work in the fic :D

Author here - when I saw that scene during my first viewing of the film, it was all that I could think about during the remainder. It is my single most favourite moment ever, and I can't even tell you how fierce my love was for Harry after that. I had tears in my eyes when the scene was over, it affected me so tremendously.

New Years Day ~ This filled with gems of gold
I absolutely adored this. This story is full of gems of dialog, and emotion that touched me and were precious. I hope I have your permission to friend you, whoever you are. I loved the concept, the dialog, the descriptions, the drama. I felt right at home, and felt as if I was in the story and involved with it. A wonderful nightcap, to my many glasses of wine, and a good way for entrance of 1-1-2011. Thank you for your time, and creativity. You are a gem.

I don't, as a general rule, usually read mpreg, but I gave this one a whirl - you can thank your epic author notes for convincing me to give it a try and I am so bloody glad I did!

It was so well done, the natural progression of the relationship between Harry and Draco, the breakdown of Harry and Ginny's relationship, the caring and love that Harry showed toward Draco and the baby. I loved it all, the entire thing.

If I'm not already your friend, I will be soon!

I'm so excited to see people who don't normally read mpreg trying out my story - so thank you for being one of them! I'm glad that I didn't scare you off entirely, haha. ;-)

I think the title described this fic perfectly. It really was some kind of wonderful :D This was fantastic work. I really loved how you portrayed Harry as being slightly broken after he came back from the dead, I don't think enough authors address the trauma that would have caused. Wonderful work.
Tarataradiane on January 11th, 2011 12:11 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! :) And yes, I feel like what he went through out there in the forest should be explored further, you really don't see it a lot (which is kind of surprising).
kayladiekayladie on January 1st, 2011 06:29 am (UTC)
Wonderful story! I was almost afraid that you weren't going to reward us with the actual birth of the baby, and I'm so glad that you did! I adore Draco for being brave enough to walk away from the Malfoy family name after Lucius was such a bastard. I've never really cared one way or the other about Astoria, but I could really feel her anguish here.

The dance was awesome! One of my favorite parts of the movie, as well. I loved the way Harry just kind of slowly welcomed Draco into his life and his heart.

Sam!! That's just too precious! The best nicknames are the unintentional ones.

Wonderful story!

I think that Draco can be very brave when he wants to be. :)

I'm glad that you liked my story! Thanks for reviewing! <333

I absolutely LOOOOVED this. The mpreg was handled so great in it. And this fandom is the only one that I'll read mpreg.

I loved how you handled the ending of Harry and Ginny's relationship and the buildup of Harry and Draco's.

OMG - I am soooo in love with this it's stupid!!!

Let me first say that your header had me giggling from the get go.

The story of Draco and Astoria actually broke my heart. Having lost one baby...I know the absolute destitution you feel and women who try again and again - only to have their hopes dashed have special places in heaven, imo.

I was completely blown away with the twist of the magic that allowed Draco to become pregnant, but it makes so much sense. A life for a life...sad but poetic. And my not caring much for Lucius... it makes sense that he would steer Astoria towards ancient magic...even at such a price.

I love that Draco took a stand *and all the goodies he could grab* and left.

And Ginny and Harry splitting up was so well done. Not so much a break up - but a growing away from each other and realizing that "taking the next logical" step - isn't always the right thing to do.

I hope you realize I could go through each part of this story and tell you why I loved it - but that might be a bit much...

So I'm going to list some of the lines that stayed with me:

"Sex is…hell, Harry, even bad sex is good sex because it's still sex!"
"Do you mind? I don't think the people in the next street over heard you properly."
I literally snorted laughing at this.

And when Draco smiled…
Who wouldn't feel that tiny flutter in their chest with a smile like that directed at them?
Oh poor clueless Harry.

....she had told him that one day he would find his own kind of wonderful in the world that he could call his own. And that wonderful was named Draco and Sam. :D

And I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that the dance scene is so perfect and haunting. I adored that scene in the movie and you used it flawlessly in this story. It literally brought tears to my eyes and I found myself humming the song while I read. I also have a sneaky suspicion about you now too

Okay...it's rapidly approaching 2:30am on the first day of 2011. This gift is one that I will treasure forever. Not simply because it's for me...but because it's a fabulous story of exactly what you said:

"this is a story about how two people find their way through life - first separate, and then together, and how sharing it can allow 'some kind of wonderful' to shine through the banality of a mundane existence."

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ♥

YAYES TIMES A BILLIONTY FOR THE RECIPIENT LIKING THE GIFT!!!

I was ashamed at the length of that header. I really need to edit myself better.

The dance scene in the movie made me tear up when I first saw it, and it was all that I could think about throughout the rest of the film. It was easily my favouritest (ha) thing ever in all of HP world, and it isn't even canon. Shame, because JKR could have done it more justice than I did had she written it out, even if it were H/Hr.

I'm so sorry about your miscarriage, and it is only now that I realise I never warned for that in my embarrassingly long header - my sincere apologies if that triggered anything at all for you. :( I'm having it added now.

I'm terribly pleased with myself that you genuinely liked this story. Know that it was a real labour of love (ahahaha oh I slay me) and despite its flaws, was meant to illicit the exact response that you so graciously gave it.

Happy New Year! <3

I was really impressed with your development of the mechanism of mpreg in this fic - so sorrowful about Astoria, but so believable that this would be something the Pure Bloods would have done!

Loved the dancing too!

Here's to true love and blowjobs! ♥
