Pairing(s): Harry/Draco. (With implied Draco/other men; implied past Harry/Cho; and brief, future, imagined but not-real Harry/Charlie.)

Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): EWE. Discussion of the terminal illness of a child (a la Tiny Tim), but if you know Dickens, you know it will be all right.
Epilogue compliant? Not for Harry or Draco, so no kids for them, but there is implied Ron/Hermione.
Word Count: ~30,000
Author's Notes: With the greatest of apologies to Charles Dickens. The idea to write an adaptation of A Christmas Carol as H/D landed in my brain and would not be moved. Many thanks to my beta M. for not discouraging me, but also, oh God, why didn't she discourage me?! Huge thanks also to H. and L. for more beta help once the deed was done. [name redacted], you are a lovely person who did not in any way ask for this particular craziness, but you did have many marvellous things in your sign-up that I tried to incorporate here. Happy Holidays!

Thank you! The best part was the slow build-up of Draco realising his feelings and then acting on them. -- oh, yay! That was really just the story I wanted to tell, about casual sex between them turning into something more. Dickens was just a vehicle through which to do that. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I am so in love with this story. It is brilliant.
I wanted to shake Draco and console Harry for the most part but the spirits did part of that job for me and then Draco himself did the other :)
I have a huge smile on my face now. Thank you!

I fell in love with this story! It has everything I could possibly hope for in a H/D fic: it's fun, endearing, even heart-wrenchingly sad at times and the sex is seriously hot and steamy like it should be between these two. And the best of all, it comes with a truly happy ending. A beautiful re-telling to get the Christmas spirit going. Well done!

"I am," he said again, more quiet this time. "Merlin," he breathed, trying to collect himself. "I haven't seen you at all since..."
"I died."
"Yeah." Draco swallowed. "That."

Draco had done the unthinkable then, and laughed. He caught it quickly, but not before he'd bared more to Potter in those three seconds than he had in their entire lives up to that point. Watching from the edges of the room, the other Draco saw it happen – his face split into a broad grin, his teeth showing and a low, delighted sound coming from his throat. He also saw what he'd missed before, worried as he'd been at the time about bringing himself back under control: Potter was watching him with open interest on his face. His lips were parted and his eyes narrowed to Draco, taking in every second of the rare moment when Draco had actually let his guard down.
God," Draco moaned to the spirit. "I could have fucked him right there, and we'd have had three extra years."

"I am the Ghost of Christmas Present."
"Gifts!" Draco's shoulders relaxed. "Well, that will do fine, then. You can stack them over here."
The spirit gave him a look, and Draco sighed.
"It was a
little bit funny."

As Draco's eyes closed, the soft warmth of the bed and Harry's embrace lulling him to sleep, he felt Harry's head fall to his shoulder. His breath tickled Draco's skin as he fell asleep, his breathing deep and rhythmic. Something in Draco's heart seemed to lift free, like a length of chain dissolving into the winter night.

Thank you very much! I'm so glad you liked those bits and that the story worked for you overall! It was sort of a tough fit, Dickens + H/D, so it's great to hear that you enjoyed it. :)

I loved this SO MUCH. This is going to be one of those stories I re-read again and again no matter what time of year it is.

Wow, this was absolutely and completely amazing. What an awesome start to the fest. This had just the right level of sad and angst, and I cried way more than I anticipated--and it was all rewarded with a very satisfying end. Such a good job with the Christmas Carol interpretation--just really great. I love the moments we saw: Harry and Draco at the Ministry party, the first sex (which we already knew was way more than Draco would allow himself to believe), how Harry was after Draco left... I can't think of anything else I would have wanted that you didn't include. I'll definitely be rereading this one!!

Thanks so much for participating, writing, and sharing!

Thank you very much! I shrieked and did a little dance to see that this was posted first, so I could only hope it would start the fest off right. :) It was sort of tough to fully get all of Dickens in there, so I gave up trying and just tried to tell a story about Draco and Harry falling in love. :) I'm so glad you enjoyed it! ♥

Dyson? Is this you?!

If not, then may I stalk the awesomeness out of you, mystery writer of winnage and rainbows (who made me tear up ever so bittersweetly over poor Draco's pitiful, way too Harry-less, life <3333)? Please say yes! :D
lee: Harry/Draco - textsnegurochka_lee on January 16th, 2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
Not Dyson, but I totally shrieked with glee at being mistaken for her! Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. ♥

This was wonderful! I feel like I'm only repeating others comments, but it will definitely be added to my favorites. What a wonderful way to start the Christmas season!

i don't know words that can accurately describe how fantastic I thought this story was. It made me cry, and I can honestly say that I have never felt so moved by a fanfic before! Draco was so perfectly flawed, and I loved the way he found his values and attitudes changing as the night went on. Harry was so in love and vulnerable! When he saw Draco put his clothes on and lost control it was so heartbreaking! One of the scenes that really stood out for me was the rainbow icecream with Teddy- such a beautiful idea. The sex scenes were some of the hottest I've ever read, but it was because of their chemistry and desperate passion... it sizzled.

I am a rambling mess because I have too many emotions, but mystery writer I think you are absolutely amazing and I sincerely thankyou for sharing such a touching story.

Thank you very much! I'm so glad those specific scenes worked for you, and that the story as a whole came together. I really appreciate your comment! ♥

Oh, that was fabulous.
I have to be honest, I was NOT pleased with the lie about Snape *sobs* but this really was well done. ;)
Beautifully written throughout, your Draco made me weep for him and then cheer with him in the end.
And Harry... Gah! He was just perfect.
Masterful job!

Thank you, Ali! I'm so glad you liked it. :) And eeek, Snape! :( I knooooow. There is actually an alternate ending that all betas hated, where Snape comes back to hang out with Andromeda Christmas night, and it is revealed that he put the chains on as a costume to scare Draco, but really he's fine. (although still dead, natch). :) I still kind of like to think that, because yeah, poor Snape.

Oh god, I loved this so much. I can't even tell you. I'm gushing about it to a friend over YM right now. Just everything about it--the beautiful, confident writing, the wonderful adaptation of A Christmas Carol that ran so seamlessly and was perfect for Draco. The characterisation that felt so right for every single character, and the story, that pulled me in hard and moved and left me feeling so, so good and happy.

The way you described Draco's emotions and his crumbling, protective facade made sympathise with him so hard. And Harry, god. I feel in love with him all over again through Draco's eyes. And sweet, fragile Teddy, and strong Andromeda and Hermione and all the Weasleys! I have to say, I loved, so much, that Draco was enfolded with the Weasley family in the end. I've never seen that done so beautifully before--so often in H/D fics the writer does everything she can to cut the Weasley's entirely out of the picture. So thank you for keeping Ron and Hermione as Harry's support and best friends and thank you for that wonderful ending.

What a fantastic beginning to the fest. :D I'm just enthralled, writer. ♥

Eeeek, thank you!! ♥♥♥ I still can't believe you didn't know this was me. :) I really just wanted to write a casual-sex-turns-to-something-more story for them; the Dickens stuff came later and seemed to be a decent device for it, even though it would never be a perfect match. I'm so thrilled you enjoyed it!

IDK, I think there would be far more problems with Weasleys than I show here, but also, they really are a generous and forgiving bunch in canon. I just can't imagine them holding a grudge, and especially not if it would hurt Harry, who they would do absolutely anything for. *hugs them all* IDK, I got all sappy this Christmas season! :/

Spectacular. A Christmas Carol is one of my absolute favorites and you have re-told it brilliantly! What an amazing start to this fest!!!

Thank you very much! I was leery about trying to stick too close to the original and stick a square peg in a round hole, cough, so I'm glad this sort of loose adaptation worked for you. :)

Thank you! It was the Draco coming-to-love Harry story that I really wanted to tell here; the Dickens was just a device for telling it. :) I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
