Happy H/D Holidays, [name redacted]!
Author: snegurochka_lee
Recipient: [name redacted]
Title: Humbug (A Christmas Tale)
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco. (With implied Draco/other men; implied past Harry/Cho; and brief, future, imagined but not-real Harry/Charlie.)
Summary: Draco has been taking his casual relationship with Harry for granted. Visits from four key ghosts the night before Christmas just might shake up his priorities in life.
Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): EWE. Discussion of the terminal illness of a child (a la Tiny Tim), but if you know Dickens, you know it will be all right.
Epilogue compliant? Not for Harry or Draco, so no kids for them, but there is implied Ron/Hermione.
Word Count: ~30,000
Author's Notes: With the greatest of apologies to Charles Dickens. The idea to write an adaptation of A Christmas Carol as H/D landed in my brain and would not be moved. Many thanks to my beta M. for not discouraging me, but also, oh God, why didn't she discourage me?! Huge thanks also to H. and L. for more beta help once the deed was done. [name redacted], you are a lovely person who did not in any way ask for this particular craziness, but you did have many marvellous things in your sign-up that I tried to incorporate here. Happy Holidays!

This is just eery! Not a week ago I was thinking if there was a H/D-version of A Christmas Carol and that if there wasn't, there definitely should be. And here it is! The Universe complies! And this fic was even better than I fantasized.

Such a wonderful story. So emotional and yet not sappy, it made me hot, and sad, and then hot again, and then so so happy (then, again, hot...). This Draco was fantastic and his process of learning what is really important and what he wants from life felt believable and aching.

Fantastic start to the fest. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you! You know, I got the idea for it back in August and could not believe it hadn't been done before. I scoured the archives for hd_holidays to make sure and couldn't find one (although I'm sure someone's written one somewhere else before!) I didn't bank on how many other versions there would be for other HP pairings, though, so I've been facepalming throughout December a little bit at ever having thought this might be unique! :/ Ah well. It was still terrific fun to write.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it. :)

So last night I was having a terrible day and being absolutely miserable and sick. This fic made my night. It was an absolute wonder to lay in bed with soup, Christmas drink, tissues and disinfectant and just read this amazing fic. I love that you used Dickens "a Christmas carol" and HOW you used it. It is brilliantly executed and it made my heart ache in all the right places and time. What a way to start this fest! I loved it so much. Thank you, mysterious author for writing and sharing this wonderful fic!

Aw, I'm so glad I could make you feel better! Thank you! and HOW you used it -- oh good, I'm so glad that worked for you. I didn't want to try to rewrite the whole thing, because it would never work in HP 'verse. I really just wanted to tell an H/D love story, and the Scrooge angle seemed to work as a crutch for it. :) I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

I just started reading A Christmas Carol the other day, so with the original very fresh in my mind, I can only congratulate you on doing a wonderful job of capturing the tone of the classic here. (And yes, pensieve! Exactly what I thought when reading Scrooge's first journey with the Ghost of Xmas Past). Your Draco is so perfectly cast and his transformation is moving and believable. Lovely writing and characterizations and just overall gorgeous. Thank you!

Thank you! I reread the original myself before starting to write, but actually I then had to try to put it out of my mind, because writing too close an adaptation wasn't working for the HP 'verse. :/ I'm so glad this little "inspired by" tale worked for you. :)

So much love for this!! I've already it three times and a little Geary each time (in a very good way!) What a wonderful way to start this fest. Thank you for this truly lovely fic.

Opps! that anon comment was from me (Frayach). I didn't realize I wasn't signed in for some reason - still getting used to the LJ iPad app. Also I wanted to correct an omission - I left out the 3 from how many times I've already read your fic, and I suspect I'll be reading it even more than that :)

Oh for heaven's sake! Damn auto-correct. I meant to say I love this fic so much and that I've read it 3 times already & each time it made me teary (not Greary - wtf does that even mean??). But teary in a wonderful heart-squeezy way :) Sorry for being so inept. I blame it on the woeful absence of a latte in my life at the moment.

Just wonderful! Great use of originality to take a well-known story and make it uniquely h/d! I LOOOOVE the tender, emotionally invested / fragile Harry [*SWOOOON*] and Draco was a perfect Scrooge except younger and much, much sexxier (all other Scrooge-like characters for the rest of eternity: TAKE NOTE!)

The story and characters were great, and the intimacy was *drooooool* and then add the complexity of emotions to the physicality - the writing was so powerful and beautiful for these parts. well done, and thank you!!

Thank you! I'm really glad the adaptation worked for you. I didn't want to stick too close to the original, because it just wasn't working for the HP 'verse. It's just an H/D love story at heart that I wanted to tell, and the Scrooge idea seemed like one way to tell it. And aw, emotionally-invested!Harry. *pets him* :)

This fic - god. I can't even. It took me all day yesterday to read it and I loved every word. I was stuck by the side of my nan's hospital bed from 7.20am til 5.30 pm and I couldn't have been more grateful for this fic. It wiled away the hours perfectly.

The story - wow. Draco's agonising over Teddy's plight made me cry. I could just feel his desperation. I wanted to dislike Draco and his ways, but I just couldn't. The way you wrote him was just perfect. I loved Harry as well. So much. Just the whole thing - ♥

I will be stalking you (if I'm not already). Just pre-warning you.

Thank you very much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to dislike Draco and his ways, but I just couldn't. Oh, that's wonderful to hear. My beta took me to task early on about needing to keep Draco likeable somehow, even though he's a bit of a dick. :) I'm so glad that worked for you.

I hope your nan has recovered! ♥

Oh my god, this story was perfect! I had to wipe a tear a time or two and had the huuuugest fuzzy feelings while reading this...I could read dozens of Sequels for this, this is so awesome, I don't have articulate words xD
lee: Harry/Draco - textsnegurochka_lee on January 18th, 2012 02:09 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much! Yay, fuzzy feelings! This is a bit more romantic than my usual fare, but I just could help myself from wanting to tell a basic H/D love story for Christmas. :)
your_huckleberyyour_hucklebery on December 2nd, 2011 10:06 pm (UTC)
Perfect fic to start with. This retelling was really well done and most enjoyable. I would of like the ghost to have been HP characters though.
lee: Harry/Draco - textsnegurochka_lee on January 18th, 2012 02:12 pm (UTC)
Thank you!

I did originally intend the ghosts to be HP characters, but I hit a block: who could they be? Dead characters? Okay. That gives several to choose from. Fred? Tonks? Remus? Sirius? Hedwig? I actually started a segment with Fred as Christmas Past, but... I had too many questions about him, not Draco! Why is Fred a ghost? What is his dead!life like? Is he sad? Will he see his family in one of Draco's memories and be too sad? It was just taking the story too far away from Draco, to me. I wanted the ghosts to blend into the background and just be part of Draco's journey so we could fully focus on him (and Harry). But I appreciate your feedback. :)
