Title: At Your Service
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco, Ron/Hermione and all those other characters one would expect to see at Hogwarts.
Summary: Hogwarts students are in danger; Harry is determined to save them all. There's only one thing he knows for certain: Draco Malfoy is somehow involved.
Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): Word count? Also, lots of plot; romance will take awhile. It's there, though, never fear!
Epilogue compliant? No. This is an "eight-year" fic. Some interview canon included, though.
Word Count: ~96,000 (no, it's not a typo, sorry)
Author's Notes: melusinahp, I can't apologize enough. I didn't actually plan to write you a book, but this story insisted on being told slowly and carefully. This is a bit, er, happier than what you normally prefer, but I share your love of canon and Harry, and I'm hoping to distract you with numerous canon references. This fic was incredibly fun to write, so thank you for your wonderful prompt. It was a joy to write for you. ♥

Massive thanks to my betas for all their corrections, suggestions and incredibly helpful concrit. Making someone beta a 96K fic is more than a little cruel; I can't thank you enough for attacking this monster without a single word of complaint. You are absolute stars. ♥

so...I just spent the last four hours reading this. despite having a final tomorrow. i blame you, mystery author, if i fail! but oh how it would be worth it if i do. that was such a pleasure to read! i absolutely love the premise of the story, and the slow build up to harry and draco's romance. I also really liked your ginny -- I don't usually in a lot of drarry fics. anyway...thank you so much for writing this, it was absolutely amazing. :)

I will do my best to come back and leave a review, but it may be a while.

96k words. Wow!

OK I'm back! Wow that was epic! I really enjoyed this, from the mystery (which was great!) to the humor and the unfolding of the romance between Harry & Draco.

But you destroyed Hogwarts! OMG!

Anyway, I really liked what you did with the characters. They were all believable and I just loved them all. This is definitely a keeper.

Thank you so much! I'm happy you liked it. Yes, Hogwarts. :( That was hard to write, but I felt like the story insisted.

Long fic is long and made of win. I have a three hour car ride tomorrow and I will demolish this! Perfect timing mods! And perfect length, mystery writer! I'll be back! ;)

Omg, that was long! But brilliant! I couldn't stop reading and now is 2.33 in the morning! But it was worth it, really! I love the intrugue and that was one of the most original fics I've ever read! This wild magic and wishes and everything. I just don't know what to say. Congratulations, I really enjoyed this story!
Aevenien: drarryaevenien on December 18th, 2011 12:11 pm (UTC)
Even I'm more awake now I still don't know what to say. But it's normal for me, when I read something brilliant, I have problem to find right words. So I'll just say once more - that was amazing. Thank you mysterious author, I spent few wonderful hours reading and it was amazing.
Also, sorry for any mistakes, English isn't my first language.
One more thing - I don't know if I ever read Harry who would be so real, so natural and so "mine". I even like Ginny, which is huge, because normally I hate her!
Happy holiday and thanks for such a wonderful story!

re: At Your Service
This is simply brilliant. It's 4.35am here, and I've spent the better part of this night wholly immersed in the universe of your story. And loved every second of it. Awesome characterisations. Everyone. Harry especially, and Draco, of course. My heart broke when Harry was holding Draco's hand to his chest. Those boys!!! *hugs them hard* And also Lavender and Parvati. So much love for those two. And Lucius! And Ginny! Brilliant. (I keep saying that, sorry, I am all out of adverbs. ;)) All the parts that had to do with magic were so well thought out. My mind was spinning in the end. Careful what you wish for, indeed. Or not. ♥ That was one ingenious and complex plot, and you pulled it off so effortlessly, complete with false leads and UST and real tragedy and wonderfully humorous parts. The image of Hogwarts Vanished makes my throat close-up, and Harry and Draco racing through the tunnels but not letting go of each others' hands does, too, for an entirely different reason. I ramble and it's way too late to still be writing silly comments. But thank you so much for this! *bows* The happiest holidays to you!

Re: At Your Service
You're such a fast reader! And reccer! I'm still amazed. And how did you even manage to be so coherent at 4.35am? I'm less coherent, um, always.

Harry and Draco racing through the tunnels but not letting go of each others' hands does, too,

Oh, I loved that bit; so happy you picked it!

Thank you so much, lovely! ♥

I'll admit, I kind of wanted to hate this just because it ate up the entirety of my day. I was going to do stuff, I swear, but six hours later (slow reader am I), I couldn't regret a single minute I spent on it. It was, wow, gorgeous does not even begin to encompass it. First of all, the idea was wholly original and completely plausible - that the Room's magic would become confused and boundaryless. It sort of reminded me of when the training room in The Astonishing X-Men comic books went berserk. Man, do I sound like a nerd.

... bypassing...

Harry in this was so brilliant, so real, so Harry and I commend you for not only your expert handling of all the characters but also the way you seemed to know and love them as you crafted their stories - especially our Golden Boy's. It really seemed like a logical continuation of the canon Harry Potter storyline - especially the way Harry rationalizes his thought processes - and I could really feel the effort and thought you put into this. It made me grin all the way through because it was as if you really respected your reader and wrote it specifically to give something back. If that makes any sense at all o.O

Malfoy was so brilliantly self-destructive and broken and sad, which is so just the way I like him. His guilt was palpable throughout and you did such a fantastic job of getting a complete view of his mindset through another character's eyes *lays on stomach and kicks feet while batting eyelashes and staring at you in awe* His rationale made such a warped sort of sense thanks to that.

I really-- *sigh* I just cannot give you a review worthy of the 96,000 words you wrote here with such utter elegance and forethought and I suppose I should just come to terms with that. Suffice it to say, there were no dull moments (which should have been impossible), it flowed smoothly, the characters were my characters, the ones I'd grown up with since I was ten-years-old, and the story was new and just utterly lovely. I bow to you, mystery author. You may now rest for a year if you like.
Faithfaithwood on January 14th, 2012 10:19 pm (UTC)
Thank you for this beautiful review. I'm very glad you didn't end up hating the fic. :D

the characters were my characters, the ones I'd grown up with since I was ten-years-old

Thank you especially for telling me this, because what more could I ask for? I just want those characters back, too, so I'm thrilled this story made you feel like they were here. ♥

I finished it! And it made for a wonderffffful evening! I loved the twisty mystery, and Draco's doubt and hesitance and vulnerability. Oh, and did I mention it was super hot? Also, Harry's own confusion about his feelings was well done, and Ginny was portrayed so realistically (and no demonized, thank you.) Also, Lavender. So, yes, the side characters were ace! Thank you!

Thank you so much!

I'm so happy you liked Ginny and Lavender. I had so much fun writing them.

This was truly incredible. One of the best and most touchingly believable H/D relationships I've read in a long long long time. What a beautiful fic!

God this was so amazing and incredibly well written. The mystery about the castle/students was very engaging. I had no idea who or what was behind it. You left me on the edge of my seat til the end.

I love how you've written the characters. I loved Draco. I loved Harry. There's so many great moments in this and it's going to take me forever to list them all. I'm just itching to go back and reread them already.

I loved the romance. The first kiss. The happy ending. Guh. ♥

But overall if I have to use one word to sum up this fic, it's flawless. You can really tell so much thought, effort and talent has been poured into it. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

This fic is absolutely amazing. The plot is utterly brilliant. I love the revelation and how it all played out till the end.

The UST between Harry and Draco is so good. I love the confusion that Harry felt throughout the entire fic, and the way many things only made sense in retrospect. The relationship between all the characters are well-written, complex but not too complicated.

Thank you for writing this amazing fic.
