Title: Burning Day: A Tale of Rebirth
Pairing(s): Draco/Harry, implied past Ginny/Harry
Summary: Looking for a bit of solitude over his winter holiday, Harry Potter rents a home in Scotland, only to end up in the middle of adventure, with ice cream in coffee, enchanted furniture, and more magical creatures than he’d ever imagined. Plus, there is a man who looks uncannily like his school rival from Hogwarts. But, he has no memory of meeting Harry in the past. Harry is determined to find out what happened to Draco Malfoy between his disappearance and finding his new identity as a charming unicorn trainer at the Scotland Unicorn Reservation for Lost Youths.

Author's Notes: Hello ile_o! May this serve as a warning that, since you asked for “UNICORNS!!!”, I gave you unicorns. Probably in all caps with a few extra exclamation points, too. There’s also plenty of plot – what began as a 10,000 story became a 20,000 monster (in the best of ways). I do hope you like it! Thanks must go out to D, A, and K, who were the best of cheer!readers. Even more thanks to taradiane with her super!beta and the other mods of HD_hols - you all are the most wonderful! Happiest of Christmases to a talented artist in our fandom!

**Mod note: This was originally posted with the file name pointing to the wrong recipient. *facepalm* The fic was correct, just the file name was wrong (as they're all named as 'for_recipient.html'). It has since been renamed, but if you had it bookmarked under that wrong name, it will no longer work for you. Just FYI. I apologize for the error!

I came here via a rec. I've never really read much in H/D, only really what people have recced, and I followed a Big Bang fest a few years back, but I haven't read any Potter for ages. :)

This was a lovely treat of a story. The crafting of the setting was very well done. The intervening years weren't laboured over, weighing down the beginning unnecessarily; instead, it was starting fresh with Harry escaping to a place as unfamiliar to him as to the reader. It isn't a mystery that Phoenix is Draco; the mystery instead is why Draco is Phoenix, and why he's remained so for so long. These choices in storytelling were really good ones. It freed the flow of story up to linger on the growing love and friendship between Harry and Phoenix rather than getting mired in the past. Your method of crafting reflected the spirit of the story as a whole, giving it an enviable quality of unity and completeness.

I loved your descriptive passages, too. The tree house in particular was a very clear and individual place, different from other canonical (and noncanonical) locations but still recognisably belonging to that same world. It gave Harry (and the reader) a grounding point to gravitate to between excursions into the outside world.

This was so sweet! I loved this Draco, even though it was sad that he felt the need to Obliviate himself. But in doing so, it seemed he was able to remember who he really was. I loved that Harry fell in love with him, even knowing who he was all the time. The unicorns were a fantastic addition to the tale and I adored Georgey! I was as happy as Draco was when he was accepted by the herd.

I also liked that Draco went back to SURLY after he remembered who he was. It must have been hard for Harry to agree to wait, but I'm sure that he felt Draco was well worth waiting for. Loved this story so much!

Such a wonderful feel-good fic! I have to confess that I hesitated a little before I read this fic because the combination of amnesia!Draco and unicorns sounded a little bit ... cracky?, but this story was totally marvellous <3 I really enjoyed the idea of a unicorn reservation centre (and Georgey! Why aren't there more chubby unicorns in fandom?) and the chacterisations were wonderful. The whole atmosphere felt really winter-y, especially with the midnight drifts (moonlight upon the glistering white snow). Lovely lovely ♥

This was just magical. There were moments I could really feel the wonder of it all: the walks in the snow at midnight, the herd of unicorns, the roof patio with a view of the stars through the trees - beautiful.

And I love how Harry and Phoenix's feelings were so obvious and easily embraced, and especially how Draco's emotions couldn't be hidden behind his usual wall anymore.

Will you drift with me? ♥ ♥ ♥

I love this fic!!! Actually, it's my favorite of the fest. :D The unicorns and the whole idea of the Surly - wonderful. Midnight drifts in the snow. And that tree house! I want that tree house! Loved the way Harry and Draco came together and how your wrote them. This was just beautifully written and an absolute pleasure to read. Absolutely magical!! ♥

This was a fun read. The idea of having Draco end up at a unicorn reserve after the war worked really well.

This was lovely:) The tree house was wonderful, and a Shetland-unicorn has to be the most adorable creature imaginable - and he even gores werewolves to death!

That was just beautiful!
I loved the idea of SURLY and the unicorns and when the herd finally accepted brave little Georgey I think I teared up. *sniffs*
I love the gentle pace of the story, the way Harry found not only Draco but himself as well.
And when Harry sent Draco that owl asking him to 'drift with him' I melted. *happy sigh*
Fabulous job! :)

Good, loved this. The Surly, the unicorn, and obviously Draco and Harry. Everything was perfect.
