Rating: PG
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement is intended.
Warning(s): None
Epilogue compliant? No. Set shortly after the end of the Second Voldemort War.
Word Count: 66,000
Author's Notes: It is not possible that there has ever been a fest with better mods than this one. Many thanks for your years of hard work and I hope that next Christmas you are beset only by vouchers for foot massages delivered by people of your choice of gender with the physiques of Olympic divers. *Mod taradiane would be content with Tom Hiddleston dropping by for tea and conversation. Mod dysonrules will take the aforementioned Olympic divers, but would request that they wear hoodies. Only hoodies.

cassie_black12, you have always been such a stalwart bastion of kindness and enthusiasm in fandom. Thank you! This is less one of your prompts than two of them smooshed together with bits of the third sprinkled. I should have stopped reading at the first one!
Thanks, also, to my beta J, who is the patientest and kindest! Truly a gem! And also to R for her spot-on points of ‘More here!’ and her advice and criticism, which was as incisive and invaluable as ever (as well allowing me to shamelessly steal a couple of her lines), and to T, T and L for their shouting at me to finish. All remaining mistakes are my own fault entirely.

And for the trainspotters amongst us, this story is set in 2000, during the St Pancras Upgrade, while the Eurostar was still leaving from Waterloo International, which is nowhere near as sexy as the new station!

WELL, I LOVED IT, AND NOW I LOVE YOU TOO!!!

Seriously, I don't even know where to begin leaving a comment on something this glorious. You wrote everything I could have hoped for and then added some more for good measure.

The 'Harry runs for Minister' prompt was the one I secretly prayed would be chosen, and did you ever answer my prayers. The plot was great -- I like that although acting wrongly, Percy was motivated by grief and guilt rather than any real kind of evil/malice.

I loved idea of Pansy living with the older Grangers, and how well she seemed to be accepted by both them and 'Nessa'. I especially loved the moment when they discussed Hermione Obliviating them during the war -- I might have sniffled a little at that bit. Also, hilarious that Nessa was convinced Hermione was some kind of James Bond in training I've always thought it must be especially hard for Muggleborns to live with a foot in each world whilst till keeping secrecy statutes.

I love when Ron is the first one to figure things out between Harry and Draco, and his reaction here was perfect. And the bit where he hopes the relationship will burn out before Hermione ever needs to know because that's what always happens to Harry's love life was great, and so typically Ron.

And talking of Ron, I have to say that, even though this was a H/D fic, I think the standout relationship of this story was between Ron and Draco. There's so much history between those two, and there's no 'sexual attraction' element there to ease the way like there is with Harry, so I always think that making these two get along and doing it believably is a real challenge. You managed it PERFECTLY!!! There are so many moments between them that felt so right - but this bit is my Ron moment:

“We have all been complete pricks to each other at some point in the last ten years. Admittedly,” he turned to Draco, “it was mostly us versus you, but Harry, you were an absolute twat in fifth year, and I was a complete cock during the war. I’ve spent the past few days operating under the assumption that we were letting all of that go and working together for the common good. Yes?”

The slow build of the relationship between Harry and Draco was great, and I especially loved the moment's before Draco goes into danger where they're both so obviously worried for each other but not able to show it because no one else knows. And Harry's resignation to what has to be done...I just wanted to squish him. And that last scene where they're a little bit uncertain and reassuring each other, it's so sweet and tender that I just melted a little bit.

You made me smile, laugh out loud, and generally flail quite a lot while I was reading this. I'm not overstating things at all when I tell you how much I genuinely LOVED this story. You're sense of humour shone through and there were a few undignified snorts, I dont' mind telling you. Particularly over comments like this:

Draco didn’t ask how Potter knew what a butter churn looked like. The answer would only be something distressing, like helping Hagrid to optimise Thestral dairy opportunities

Genius!!

Oh, and I loved the throwaway comment about the Duke of Edinburgh and his outrageous comments!!

Thank you so so much for all the time and effort that must have gone into writing this masterpiece.

Oh, what a great story, so full of politics and human emotions at the same time. The fact that Ron, George and the others never stopped to care about Percy, the humanity showed by Rowle's aunt, the relationship between Harry and Draco, the friendship between Draco and Pansy... Really gorgeous.

Thank you so much! It was really important to me to show that everyone was a person, regardless of their bad decisions, so your comment made me smile hugely!

Well, I agree with everything Cassie had to say, apart from the fact that as I was working today I had no plans for laundry or productivity of any kind...

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. Loved all the political intrigue and the supporting cast, also I have a soft spot for Ron. You've cheered up my very boring, alcohol-less New Year's Eve! Well done, Mystery!Author ;-)

That could have been anyone's white bottom in that photo!

Oh, you always know when it's me. It's the dodgy jokes, I'm sure. Very glad to hear I brightened up your New Year, your comment certainly brightened mine!

Omg, this was...ddfvbdivbnsoidcnyoeruchbouchbodvhw no words!

Usually I'm not one for politics but dayum, you managed to do it so well and I love well-planned and thought out stories and yours definitely is one!

Can't even begin to describe what I loved! Be assured that I found everything simply awesome...Pansy being fascinated by hairstraighteners, Percy's madness and his terrifying mindset on what is right or wrong, Harry and Draco's simply awesomely written character/relationship development and Ron being amusingly accepting of Draco and his relationship to Harry. The political games were perfectly executed as well, loved everyone working together!

What a wonderful fic, mystery author! Truly!

This was wonderful. So much intelligence and kindness from most of the characters, even some unexpected ones, without it being too syrupy or soft or fluffy. Seeing original characters and familiar ones rally round a cause was excellent. Enjoyed the slow build at the beginning too and the way Harry entered the story. The alternating points of view were effective.

It was also interesting to see so much important stuff rest on the kids, if you will. Kingsley and Narcissa were around as were some older original characters and peripheral ones, but it was mostly the school kids of Hogwarts, not all that many years later. Stepping up because they had to. I found it refreshing in a way that no one went to Hogwarts, for a change. That Arthur and Molly stayed out of it, there was no sign of Hogwarts professors or staff. (It's interesting to me that many things I often like in a fic were missing here, but it made the fic all the stronger in a way. Good for the holidays, if that makes sense. It seems weird to call this a "light" fic given how much plot there is and how much action and how it's not at all a PWP or a big ball of fluff, but it manages to be a light read while still being plotty and long and excellent. Positivity without going overboard, acknowledging shades of grey without going too dark or light.)

Truly a lovely read.

This was just fabulous. The whole world you built up, with all the intricacies of politics was brilliant. All of your characters were so well written. Both Harry and Draco were recognisable but with extra maturity and thoughtfulness - Draco complimenting Kreacher. Lots of bits made me laugh a lot (Ron!) and other bits were really touching. I like how nothing was black and white - no one was wholly evil, and the motivations behind actions were explored and explained. I loved Harry's network of former Slytherins and those hiding them, as well as the endearing OCs like Armitage and her biscuits. To give this review context, it is very early morning on New Year's Day, my husband is crashed out on the sofa and I have ignored him for the last (shit!) two and a half hours to finish this story. And I'm not at all sorry.

What a fun story -- and I love Harry's compassion for Percy, and the very British feel to the entire piece :)

This was amazing - couldn't stop smiling the whole way through. I loved how everything had that easy sort of restraint to it and how attraction isn't always instantaneous epiphanies and grand declarations. Fantastic world-building as well and great characterisations for everyone. It all came together so beautifully and thank you for writing it!
