Title: The Shoemaker and the Elves
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Summary: Draco makes shoes. Or, well, at least he would have done, except they started making themselves, and really, that was quite odd, if he thought about it.

Author's Notes: Thanks to the mods for the countless hours they spend bringing this fest to life year after year. (And thanks for the gracious extension!)

Thanks also to my prereaders, beta, and Brit-picker. You are a talented group of women and I'd be a complete mess without you.

And now, Dear hdwriter, I hope you enjoy this rendition of a little holiday tale, which was first spun long ago by the timeless Brothers Grimm...

Oh, that was so lovely :) I adore this Draco, with his hard work and his standards and his stubbornness in the face of everyone turning their backs to him. And Harry is delightfully clueless (and momentarily thoughtless), but the gentleness between the two of them is perfect. And that Draco has won the loyalty of his house-elves -- that's one of the best parts. Thank you so much!

Oh good, I had hoped you would like it. I actually started three different stories for you until finally settling on this one. I do hope you liked it. I am not sure how many of your favorite things I was able to include--sorry I couldn't work in Pansy/Blaise, for example--but I do hope I at least managed to avoid any squicks while writing you a cohesive little Christmas story.

I hope you had a lovely holiday season, and again, thank you for your kind words.

Loved this story - it was wonderful. Draco was noble and Harry was marvelous (until he stumbled) but he recovered nicely. Great story

You've adapted the fairy tale of the shoemaker and the elves to the HP fandom wonderfully. I loved the image of the aged Tilly working the leather with her sore fingers for the naughty little boy that Draco had been and the good man that he tried to become.

While reading I teared up and I laughed ... so I guess it was a pretty good story. :) Thank you for the lovely Xmas present.

Aww, thank you. If I managed to evoke both tears and laughter, I'll consider my job done. :)

Thank you for reading! :)

That was awesome, Draco as a shoemaker was lovely and Harry was being really adorable about coming in all the time to buy shoes :D
Adorable and lovely! *hugs you mystery author*

What a brilliant adaptation! I loved Draco in this; his quiet pride and honest humility. The way he cared and longed for the comfort his nursemaid elf was so lovely! Harry was adorable. You even made his feet sexy! The UST was scorching and so tangible. I wasn't at all disappointed that it wasn't resolved explicitly. I am not personally a shoe addict (beyond the extent that pretty much any woman is), but I had great fun imagining all the lovely boots and buckles and exotic dragonhide. I also loved all the additions and inventions Draco adds to his creations...very clever! Thanks so much for sharing this!

Thanks so much for leaving such a lovely comment. I'm glad you liked it. The thought of Draco and his shoes captured my heart, and I thought the fairy tale fit to so perfectly in the HPverse. I just had to write it!

Thanks for reading!

This story had a really sweet, ethereal, fairytale feel - thank you!

Edit: I forgot to say that the relationship between Draco and the old Malfoy elves was a really effective motif. I really welled up at the idea of this old elf singing to him while he slept ♥

Oh, thank you. Yes, I hoped a bit of purple prose would lend a fairy tale quality to this story. I'm so glad it worked.

And yes, I adored Draco and Trilly's interactions. They warmed my heart too!

Thanks for the kind words!

This was so, so charming and well-written. And Draco's relationship to the Malfoy elves was incredibly sweet. I loved every minute of this read. :)

This story 'felt' so good! I loved the elves, and I must tell ya, I had tears in my eyes at...“Trilly is already singing to you every night, little Draco. You is just not being awake to hear her.”
Yep, big ones.
Loved the hurty want in this, enjoyed Draco's voice, especially when he began discovering the shoes the morning after.
Nice warming tale. Thanks:)

Oh, yes, I adored the thought of little Trilly caring so deeply for the boy inside of grownup Draco. He needed some love in his life, even if he didn't know it himself.

Anyway, thank you. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the lovely comments!

Absolutely sweet and lovely; great take on one of my favorite (if almost-forgotten) fairy tales.

Wonderful job!

Ahh, yes, this little fairy tale doesn't get much attention, does it? I remembered it from a play I'd seen maybe 15 years ago and when I realized how perfectly it seemed to fit into the HP-verse, I decided it simply had to be written. :)

Thank you for the kind words and thanks for reading!

This one moved me so deeply, I still have tears in my eyes. Our poor boys, still so stubborn and prideful, but old enough now to know when to let go of it. GORGEOUS!!!

Oh, thank you so much. I'm so glad you were moved by my little story. There is no higher praise. <3

I really enjoyed this, it was so sweet! especially liked the re write of a classic.
Just one thing though, New Zealand doesn't have kangaroos :)
icmezzo on January 19th, 2013 04:37 am (UTC)
OH my gosh. I giggled so hard at your comment when it came in. So silly of me to assume that kangaroos are all over due to proximity to Australia. I'm sorry, clearly I'm ignorant on your wildlife. I promise to do more research next time!

Thanks for letting me know! :)

Delightful! The scene with Trilly and Draco was heart warming, I literally melted into a pile of 'AWWW' goo!

God i love a good angst story, Thanks for sharing mystery author!
icmezzo on January 19th, 2013 04:41 am (UTC)
Oh, *thank you*! I write comedy, mostly, so this was my attempt at hardcore angst, and instead I fear I landed somewhere between slightly melancholy and heartwarming. Ooops! LOL

Thanks for the lovely comment and thank you for reading!
